Understanding hospice care

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to help you make informed decisions for yourself or someone you love.

What is hospice?

Hospice provides comfort care and support for patients with terminal illnesses and their families. The focus is quality of life, pain and symptom management, and emotional and spiritual support rather than treatment intended to cure the terminal illness.

Who is eligible for hospice care?

Hospice care is available when a physician certifies a terminal illness with a life expectancy of 6 months or less if the illness runs its normal course. Patients who continue to meet eligibility requirements may receive hospice beyond six months after recertification.

Who pays for hospice?

Medicare covers most hospice services, including medications for symptom control, medical equipment, and access to care around the clock. Small copayments may apply to certain medications and inpatient respite care. Medicaid and private insurance may also provide coverage. Our team can help you understand your benefits.

What is the difference between hospice and palliative care?

Both focus on comfort and symptom relief. Palliative care can begin at any stage of serious illness and may accompany curative treatment. Hospice is intended for people with a terminal prognosis who elect comfort-focused care for their terminal illness.

Where can hospice care be provided?

Hospice can be provided at home, in a nursing facility, or in a hospital. The care setting depends on a patient’s needs and the level of care required.

How do I request a consultation?

Call (951) 677-5300 or complete our consultation request form. Our team will discuss your needs, explain eligibility, and guide you through next steps.

Does choosing hospice mean giving up?

No. Hospice focuses on living as comfortably and meaningfully as possible. The care plan honors the patient’s goals and supports both the patient and their loved ones.
