Grief During the Holidays: Coping Strategies for Families

Gentle, practical ways to cope with grief during the holidays, honor a loved one, and support children and family members.

By the Talna Hospice Care team. Published . Last updated .

Grief often feels heavier during the holidays. It helps to plan ahead, keep only the traditions that feel right, make space to remember your loved one, and ask for support.

Coping strategies that help

Choose what fits your family this year:

  • Decide in advance which gatherings you will attend, and plan an exit if you need one
  • Keep, change, or pause traditions; there is no wrong choice
  • Light a candle, set a place, or share stories to include your loved one
  • Let children ask questions and express feelings in their own way
  • Rest, eat regularly, and limit alcohol, which can deepen low moods

When to reach out

If grief makes it hard to function for a long time, talk with a counselor or your doctor. Families of Talna patients can call us to ask about bereavement support.
